>Serious question: Is there a conspiracy against Tim Sweeney?
please hear me out

Him pushing EGS Was the reason that made PCgays turn against him, everything else people throw at him are were the results of people already being mad at him for this reason and looking for anything to further sh*tsmear him.

I don't necessarily think there had to be a paid group that specifically targeted him with sh*tsmearing BUT he did became target of paid propaganda through him being a target of the anti-China propaganda wave due to Tencent owning some shares of Epic, which were the biggest arguments against him beyond the "steam has more storefront features" argument

Most people still don't relize this but the US was running an anti-China propaganda campaign at the time (and even recently they approved spending 500 millions on it), it's pretty much confirmed by a Reuters ivestigation, but it's enought to just consider how much sudden anti-China news popped up around that time (social credit scores, debt trap strategy to exploit poor countries while pretending to help them, Xi being pity and censoring Pooh, them genociding Uyghurs), that are suddenly not pushed anymore, because guess what, none of these were true, but it's crazy how much people's reception of china all over the world changed in those years statistically

some anons might remember it, but when the whole news about EGS popped up here, there were literal chinese gore threads spammed on Ganker for days, many of them even reaching the bump limit, all titled in some relation to the Epic-Tencent relationship

as for my honest thoughts on Tim/Epic/EGS, I'm just fricking tired man, I've been through these discussions so many times. I think Storefront features are cool and all, but low distribution taxes worth more. Wish people could at least discuss these pros and cons normally but every attempt to not outright condemn Tim'sambitions was met with instant accusations of being a paid Chinese Tencent shill

if your whole reason of china-phobia is because you have been eating up clear propaganda then yeah, it's not a good enough reason

      >but low distribution taxes worth more
      ???
why would i give a frick about this as a customer
is the game cheaper for me ?
      its not, anon
i don't care about that sh*t at all

      >why would i give a frick about this as a customer
because it's the costumers who in the end have to pay for the higher taxes. This is how economy works, this is how industries work
it affects game prices (which used to be cheaper for PC than for consoles when PC used to have lower distribution taxes than consoles) and affects the content you get for your money (or the lack of it)

anon, the US is accused by the ICC of funding a genocide. Your media has been lying about it constantly to cover it, people have been jailed for protesting against it, the people fighting their own ethnic cleansing and oppression are called terrorists and getting the greenlight for being murdered along with all the nearby civilians. I don't think you have an unbiased way of judging countries

The thing is PC is still cheaper for any big publisher even on Steam since their games easily hit the threshold for lower cuts assuming they didn't work out a deal to just get that cut from the get go, on top of physical console sales being even worse for them since they pay retail + console cut. Also even when these companies get a bigger cut 99% of the time they keep prices the same and just pocket it.
I'm not saying lowering the cut is bad, tech has gotten much better and I feel every store and console should reevaluate how much they actually need to take and lower it to an acceptable amount for modern times but I'm not under the illusion it will lower prices across the board.

actually Valve lowered the "cut" for rich as frick people.
This means they can. They simply want small indie developers to pay more.

I did the math on it and Valve gets a total of $13 million from the sliding scale of 30%-20% so I wonder how much they make from the 30% because unless it's massive I feel they should just lower to 20% since they accept that as how low they are willing to go and save everyone the headache of fighting for that $13 million from a high selling game that can't argue for the lower cut from the get go.

          >since their games easily hit the threshold for lower cuts
you need to make like what, 50 million$ to get the 20% cuts that are only applied to the copies sold afterwards, meaning you actually need to make 100million to have an average of 25% cuts? It's not as good it seems. Overwhelming majority of games (even most big ones) don't sell multiple millions on Steam to actually make real use of these benefits, they only really exist to disincentivize the biggest publishers from going to other stores/opening their own.

          >Also even when these companies get a bigger cut 99% of the time they keep prices the same and just pocket it.
I would say that 99% of the time they Don't do this
games like Fifa or CoD are rare exceptions of reliable heavily overprofiting releases. If you look at the financial history of most other, even big, companies like SE, Capcom, Sega etc. it's clear that they are in a constant battle of managing profit and budget. 10-20% plus or minus revenue can absolutely mean the greenlighting or death of projects or studios

The scale from my understanding is it's after $10 million it goes to 25% and another $40 million to hit 20% for a total of $50 million unless I misread how they calculate it?
I do agree that most companies aren't making record profits compared to budgets which is why the GaaS push is so appealing for any large company because of the potential excess of profits but always run the risk of failing and they are not cheap to make.

Newell had previously requested a remote deposition, saying "that he is at risk of developing a serious illness were he to contract Covid-19," according to the filing, and thus "has structured his life to minimize exposure to possible Covid-19 transmission. According to Mr. Newell, an in-person deposition, even with the health measures which plaintiffs propose, is not consistent with those safeguards."

            Are you moronic, bot?

The suit was dismissed without prejudice in November 2021, meaning Wolfire had 30 days to amend its complaint to address the shortcomings cited by the court, and so it did—the case was revived in May 2022.

The whole topic has been poisoned by bullish and antagonistic individuals that are hard to reason with. I feel there is a lot to discuss and I try to keep it healthy and honest but some people are so caught up being anti-EGS or anti-Steam that it can be tiring and that's even before considering people just use it for easy bait too.
There are complaints and recognitions for these services but there are complaints that are either minor or not true that get thrown around.
