  • Step 5: Add the brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce and the black pepper. Cook a further 5 minutes then remove from heat and garnish with parsley.

Hint: Try not to stir too much, or these steakhouse mushrooms will become soggy. If you can, rather 'pan-flip' a few times. Any browned bits will only add to the flavor.

  • Mushrooms - You could use portobello mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms or even cremini mushrooms instead of white mushrooms.
  • Parmesan Cheese - sprinkle with a little at the end, or cheddar cheese.
  • Green Onions - sprinkle some at the end instead of parsley.
  • Beef Broth - instead of Worcestershire sauce.
  • Ground Beef - to add a little meat.
  • Fresh Herbs - add some fresh herb flavors or different spices.
  • Lemon Juice - add some for a tangy sauce.
  • Soy Sauce -
  • Sour Cream - add a little for more of a cream gravy or creamy sauce.

🧊 Storage

Once the mushrooms have cooled completely, if you have any left, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave for just a minute or so.

💡 Tips

Expert Tip: It's preferred to brush mushrooms rather than wash with water, as they're very porous and will soak up some water.

👩‍🍳 FAQs

Do you saute mushrooms on medium or high heat?

Mushrooms are better sauteed somewhere in the middle - over medium-high heat, without stirring too much - as this can encourage fluid to be released from the mushrooms - giving way for soggy mushrooms.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz White Button Mushrooms cleaned
  • 2 Tablespoons Salted Butter
  • 1 teaspoon Brown Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • ½ Medium Yellow Onion sliced
  • 2 Cloves Garlic Minced
  • ½ teaspoon Black Pepper
  • ½ teaspoon chopped Parsley garnish

Instructions

  • Melt butter over medium high heat in a medium skillet then add the sliced onions. Cook for 5 minutes until softened.

  • Clean the mushrooms with a brush, then slice into thick slices (or if they're smaller, just cut in half).

  • Add to the skillet with the onions and cook for 5 minutes, without stirring.

  • Add the garlic and cook another 2 minutes.

  • Add the brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce and black pepper and cook a further 5 minutes without stirring.

  • Remove from the heat and sprinkle with chopped parsley, for garnish.

Notes

It's important not to move the mushrooms around too much when cooking or they'll become soggy. If you're able, pick up the skillet and 'pan-flip' the mushrooms once or twice.
